Part 1 - Video Library

Video Library Focus: The focus of this video library is sixth grade English/Language Arts.
This Flocabulary lesson provides practice in Tier 2 Academic Vocabulary words, words which sixth grade students encounter in many academic areas, including English/Language Arts class and state assessments.
Connection to Sixth Grade ELA:
These words are presented in an engaging way, using rap and spoken lyrics. This lesson would be a successful way to introduce, practice, and review this vocabulary for English/Language Arts grade six students.

Figurative Language

Connection to Sixth Grade ELA:
Students will find these examples engaging, then be able to apply their knowledge to the literature or informational texts they read, such as the novel, Esperanza Rising.
21ST CENTURY LITERACY

This video explores what literacy is in the 21st Century...and how it is more than reading and writing.

Connection to Sixth Grade ELA:
Today's sixth grade ELA students need broader literacy skills, as they will need to read images, evaluate digital sources, and think critically in new ways as adults.

CREATE A SCREENCAST
This YouTube video demonstrates how to create a screencast, using the Google Chrome Extension, Screencastify.

Connection to Sixth Grade ELA:
Students will be creating a screencast as part of the demonstration of mastery of literary elements, story structure, characterization, foreshadowing, and symbolism, related to chapters of Esperanza Rising.

Character Analysis

21ST CENTURY SKILLS
What are the skills students need to be successful as adults in the 21st Century?

STORY ELEMENTS/ PLOT STRUCTURE

Foreshadowing is demonstrated in this video which links the advise Mufsa gives his son, Simba, in the Disney movie, The Lion King.

Connection to Sixth Grade ELA:
Students will be able to make the connections to foreshadowing in movies to foreshadowing in the novel, Esperanza Rising, which they are reading.
CONNOTATION VS. DENOTATION
This video addresses these questions: How can you tell the difference between what is said and what is meant? Are there ever double meanings to words?

Connection to Sixth Grade ELA:
CCSS ELA Standards for sixth grade call for students to master these concepts. Further, in a world with multiple meanings, these understanding is necessary.
DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP - OVERSHARING
Digital citizenship and the risks of oversharing information are addressed engagingly in this Common Sense Media video.
