Title: 
Grammar Practice: Verbs, Nouns, Subject-Verb Agreement

Grade Level/Target Group:
Grade 6/Integrated ELD English Class

Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.6.1
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.6.6
Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.

Pre-Planning

Big Idea(s): Practicing English verbs to gain proficiency in speaking and writing

Essential Questions: Why is English a challenging language?

Objective:  Practice correct singular and plural use of nouns and verbs, as well as develop exposure to irregular English verbs.

Summative Assessment:  Students take levels of verb tests at Activities for ESL Students, depending on their level or ability, with the goal of eventually passing all with at least a 75% mastery level.

Lesson Opening

Lesson Opening (The Hook): 
​​Students Watch the YouTube video Learn Irregular Verbs Rap Song for practice of Irregular English Verbs.

LESSON Body

  1. Explanation: 
    1. Students learn about Subject-Verb Agreement using the linked ESL YouTube video
  2. Check for Understanding: 
    1. Learn Irregular Verbs and conjugations using the list from ESL Gold website verb page.
    2. Practice Irregular Verbs with this list and the one from Owl Purdue also
  3. Extended Practice: 
    1. Owl Purdue Lab: Subject Verb Agreement Instruction page
    2. Dave Sperling's ESL Cafe practice link

Closing

Lesson Closing:  Take quizzes from Activities for ESL Students website at www.a4esl.org​​ to assess students at their various levels of mastery.

Materials

​ Materials needed for this lesson:
  • Chromebooks with access to the internet so that each student can access these links
  • WIFI sufficient for each student to log-in and access sites
