Lesson Description

In the process of reading a novel, Grade Six ELA students grapple with complex text to derive a deeper understanding of theme, character, plot, figurative language, etc. When called upon to write an essay, students struggle to find appropriate textual evidence or quotes to support their claim or thesis. In desperation, student search online for quotes or use easily accessible or obvious ones. This lesson supports students' collaborative identification, generation, and analysis of quotes while reading a book. They practice the very activities needed when writing an essay, so that their claims, analysis, and evidence improve.

Lesson Goals

Students generate and post quotes in a shared and editable Google Sheets document. The goal is for students to identify important quotes, as well as review and discuss the quotes generated by others. Practicing this in a collaborative environment supports all learners, who share and develop the ability to identify and evaluate textual evidence.

Crowd-sourced Data (Quotes from a Novel)

Rather than rely upon data they can Google, in this case quotes in a novel, students generate it collectively. Further, analysis and commentary on quotes in the novel begins as students are reading it. The column headings include: page number, code (for example M for Metaphor, S for Simile, etc.), quote, and analysis of the quote. There could be separate pages in the Google Slides for the purpose of analysis of theme, character, figurative language, etc. Additional analysis of selected quotes will be done using the Google Drawing and Google Docs lessons that follow after this one.
